Former Smethport man pleads guilty to assault with machete

A former Smethport man accused of grabbing a woman by the throat and swinging a machete entered a guilty plea on Thursday.

Mark A. Carlson, 48, of Camp Hill, appeared by video conferencing Thursday in McKean County Court before President Judge John Pavlock.

Carlson pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated assault, terroristic threats and recklessly endangering another person.

According to Assistant District Attorney Ashley Shade, on April 6, 2018, Carlson grabbed the victim by the throat, swung a machete and threatened to kill her and her daughter.

He will be sentenced April 1.

This was the second time Carlson was convicted of charges in the case.

At a jury trial in September 2019, he was found guilty of nine charges and sentenced that November to 33 to 66 months in state prison. Carlson filed an appeal after he was sentenced, and the Pennsylvania Superior Court overturned the conviction and vacated the sentence.

It was indicated at a status conference on Jan. 14, 2021, that a new trial would be set in the case. However, Carlson pleaded guilty Thursday instead.

Court records indicate Carlson went through the 2019 trial pro se — meaning without an attorney — then Philadelphia attorney Todd Mosser later filed an appeal on Carlson’s behalf. Carlson was represented by McKean County Public Defender Philip Clabaugh on Thursday.

Carlson is free, having posted $250 bail.
