Man injured in Norwich Township crash

Lewis Run-based state police investigated this truck accident Saturday night on Route 46 South, a short distance from Betula in Norwich Township. Firefighters from Norwich Township and Smethport responded to the scene and extricated the driver from the wreckage that landed over an embankment. Priority Care Ambulance transported the driver to a landing zone that firefighters from Hamlin Township had set up at the Crosby baseball field, and the patient was transported via STAT MedEvac to an out-of-area hospital. Fire police from the two departments handled traffic control. The Smethport Police Department assisted at the scene.

LEWIS RUN — A Smethport man was injured in a crash at 8:43 p.m. Saturday on Route 46 in Norwich Township.

According to Lewis Run-based state police, 46-year-old Mark Carlson of Smethport was operating a tractor trailer headed north when the vehicle left the road and struck a guardrail. The truck traveled down an embankment and struck a tree, coming to a final rest.

An oil-based substance that was being hauled was spilled from the vehicle; the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection was notified of the spill, police stated. The vehicle sustained disabling damage and was towed from the scene.

Carlson was injured and was transported to UPMC Altoona via MedeVac helicopter.

Carlson is charged with a violation of driving on roadways laned for traffic, according to police.

Smethport police, fire and EMS assisted on scene.
