KANE — Kane-based state police reported a vehicle fire that occurred at 1:47 p.m. Tuesday on Route 446 in Eldred Township, about a quarter mile north of West Eldred Road.

Police said a 2005 Dodge Durango driven by a male whose identity police did not release was traveling north on Route 446, when the vehicle was pulled to the berm of the road because the driver smelled smoke.

The driver got out, tried unsuccessfully to open the hood, then realized the sport-utility vehicle had caught on fire, police said.

Police reported the driver was not injured in the incident and declined medical treatment.

No charges were filed against the motorist, police said.

Members of the Eldred Township Volunteer Fire Department and an Eldred ambulance assisted at the scene.
