IRMC Physician Group Orthopedics now performs innovative and custom total knee replacements. The new custom total knee replacements are unique to each individual patient and last twice as long as any other knee replacement option. We are using products from Smith & Nephew Orthopedics, such as the Visionaire custom cutting blocks and Oxinium technology.
The Visionaire custom cutting blocks are personalized cutting blocks specifically designed for each individual patient. These cutting blocks allow for a more exact placement of the component which may allow the knee replacement to function better and may provide a longer lasting and more durable knee replacement. Prior to the operation, the patient undergoes an MRI and a long leg X-ray. This information then gets sent to an engineer who, in collaboration with the surgeon, develops an exact surgical plan. The custom cutting blocks are then manufactured and sent directly to the hospital several days prior to the surgery. This technology has been shown to increase the accuracy of the knee replacement as well as increase the efficiency in the operating room, which may lead to less blood loss and potentially less complications.
In addition to the custom cutting blocks, we are now offering Oxinium technology, which is a proprietary material solely manufactured by Smith and Nephew Orthopedics. This material has several distinct advantages over other types of joint replacements. First of all, this material is hypoallergenic and is almost entirely nickel free. Nickel is a metal often found in components of joint replacements. If a nickel-containing joint replacement is inserted into a patient who is sensitive to nickel, the patient may be left with a chronically painful and irritated knee. The Oxinium components do not contain nickel, therefore, the fears of nickel sensitivity are minimized. The other major benefit of Oxinium technology is that it is 4,900 times smoother than other types of materials from which joint replacements are manufactured. Because it’s smoother, there is less friction. If there is less friction, there is less wear, which may lead to a longer lasting knee replacement. In fact, this material has been shown in the laboratory setting to be good for up to 30 years.

This includes dietary supplements like glucosamine chondroitin and turmeric. Additionally, there are various biological treatments of osteoarthritis which include platelet rich plasma and stem cells harvested from the patient’s own bone marrow. Studies have shown that this can result in decreased pain and disability arising from osteoarthritis.
