Bradford’s elementary chess team captured first place in the elementary section of the annual event conducted at Pioneer High School, County Line Road, Yorkshire, N.Y.
Fifth-grader Cooper Haight tied for third place, along with Kadyn Tessena, and won the individual trophy on tiebreaks. The tournament was held on Saturday and was organized and directed by Tom Warner.
Members of the winning team were Haight, third-grader Deidra Johnson, fifth grader Trenton Johnson, third-grader Aiden Ferguson and fourth-grader Kadyn Tessena.
Several other members of the Bradford Chess Club participated in other sections. Coach Ron Buchheit captured second place in the adult section, losing only to Candidate Master Mark Clark.
Ninth grader Tim Mulcahy competed in the high school section and managed to outplay an opponent rated 162 points higher to tie for sixth place individual. Seventh graders Daniel Taylor and Peyton Haight played in the junior high section, and three youths participated in the unrated section: first-grader Micaiah Ferguson, third-grader Miles Bundy and fourth-grader Lucas Hincham.
The following players for won games against higher rated opponents: Tim Mulcahy (162 points), Daniel Taylor (147 points), Peyton Haight (86 points) and Aiden Ferguson (163 points). Aiden and Tim were the big winners with gains of 66 and 52 rating points, respectively.
The club’s next away event will be the Holiday Season Tournament on Dec. 15 at Buffalo (N.Y.) Seminary.
