No one was hurt, but a Bradford Township outbuilding was destroyed in an early morning fire Wednesday, officials said.

Bradford Township fire chief Dan Burkhouse said the call came in for a fully engulfed outbuilding at 61 Fernwood Drive at around 1:50 a.m. Wednesday. Burkhouse said the homeowner, Dominic Cottone, was asleep inside an adjacent residence before being awakened by an Era delivery man who spied the flames.

Cottone was uninjured and his home undamaged, but the nearby outbuilding, which Burkhouse described as a garage or barn-like structure, was a total loss.

Four dogs typically housed in the space were not inside at the time of the fire.

A monetary amount of the damage was unavailable and the cause remained under investigation Wednesday.

It took three engines and 20 fire fighters three-and-a-half hours to get the blaze under control Wednesday morning as fire companies from Lewis Run, Derrick City and Corydon Township Volunteer Fire Departments stood by.

Burkhouse said one engine had to be called back to the scene at around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday to treat hot spots that crept up after initial fire fighting efforts ended.
