Bruce’s Story

Bruce Gray transformed his garage into his own business and created Foster Brook Glass and Mirrors.  He started off as the sole proprietor for his business, but later switched the company over to an LLC.  Bruce and his wife, Rhonda, continued running the business out of the garage for a couple years but had to move into a bigger building back in 2005.

They decided to keep their original company name, even after finding the new building and moving their location into downtown Bradford.  That has confused some people, but it provides them with a little tidbit to talk about when they first come to visit Foster Brook Glass and Mirrors.  The location may have changed, but the people running the store have remained the same, including one of their helpers, Jason, who has worked with them almost since they first opened their doors.  Seth just started a few months ago, but he has been doing a great job.

Rhonda even had this to say about him.  “I was impressed with him and his politeness and his respectfulness from the day he got his application.”

With Jason and Seth working alongside Bruce and Rhonda to form the well-oiled machine that is Foster Brook Glass and Mirrors, they can continue to blaze through the trails that come their way.  They have already experienced some innovation in their business since they opened up shop in the Bradford area.  The company originally started off selling predominantly to residential customers, but eventually their focus switched over to include commercial and store front projects.

In point-of-fact, they currently do about 55 percent of their business in the commercial market, while the other 45 percent gets filled up by residential projects.  They have discovered that they receive almost the same number of jobs coming to them from both fields they work in.  One other thing Bruce has learned over his years living and working in the Bradford area, is how much life differs here versus the “BIG CITY!”

Bruce originally lived in St. Catharines, Ontario in Canada, and he trained and worked in the glass industry in Canada as well, whereas Rhonda grew up in the Bradford area.  She inspired Bruce to move to the Bradford area after they got married.  Bruce has come to miss the availability of products that came along with living in an urban area, but he has come to love small-town living.

Bruce has discovered he also likes doing business the way people do it in a small-town environment, with a handshake.  In addition to that, Bruce knows he can walk around town and see his banker and contractor face-to-face, along with many other people who help him operate his business more smoothly.  Bruce and Rhonda have both integrated themselves into the Bradford community, as they both firmly believe in supporting local businesses.  They also both coach soccer for a local school and serve on both the PTO and Festival of Trees Committee.

Bruce and Rhonda also help out with the Era’s Less Fortunate fund and both actively support the Bradford SPCA, which was where they picked up one of their store’s star workers, Lucas, a two and a half year-old Labrador mix.  The SPCA had rescued Lucas and his litter from a home while they were still puppies and had placed them in quarantine, which is where Rhonda and he first met.

Rhonda had this to say about that encounter and her follow-up visits.  “I saw him before he was even out of quarantine and we bonded right away.  I went back to see him a number of times at the SPCA before I was able to adopt him.”

Patrons who come into Foster Brook Glass and Mirrors get a nice visit form Lucas as he has proven himself very friendly.  He will sometimes try to “talk” to customers, and some of them have confused that for him growling.  As long as people haven’t already developed a fear of dogs, however, they have mostly been very receptive of Lucas.

So please stop over to the store and visit with Rhonda and Lucas, and you might even catch Bruce while he runs in and out on business.
