About Lakeview Senior Care & Living Center

Local senior care facility keeps traditional care alive.

Lakeview Senior Care & Living Center has seen its share of changes over the years, but quality care for the people who enter the residence has remained the primary concern for the caretakers of the facility ever since the early 1900s.  Ralph and Harriet Gleason used to live in the house situated on the grounds where Lakeview now stands, and they had built themselves quite a reputation for taking care of people recovering from various ailments.

Former Smethport resident Mary McCoy McKay sent a letter to Lakeview back in February of 2002 describing what the Gleasons had done for her.  Mrs. McCoy McKay wrote in her letter, “When I was little myself and my sister and two brothers had scarlet fever-my bout culminated in slow recovery.  Ralph and Harriet Gleason lived in the residence there and were very close friends of my parents and they took me to their home to recuperate while my parents continued caring for my siblings.”

According to her letter, those events occurred around 1912, and she thought it might interest the proprietors at Lakeview that “early in the house’s existence, sick people were cared for there.”  The Gleason’s nurturing carried over to the facility originally built in the 1940s and operated as a nursing home until the 1960s.

Charles and Sue Stone purchased the home then.  They transformed the building into a more modernized facility, expanding it to include two new wings.  They renamed the facility Stone’s Manor and it remained under that name until Guardian Eldercare, based out of Brockway, PA, purchased it in 1996.  They renovated the facility further, adding on a personal care home.  Because of all the renovations, the facility now offers a grand-total of 62 beds, with 34 of them devoted to skilled nursing and the other 28 devoted to personal care.

All the renovations add up to a great reason for people to enjoy their stay at Lakeview, but the friendly staff and high return to home rate, which exceeded 70 percent last year, dwarf the renovations in comparison.  They offer a facility that is small enough to allow them to know their residents on a first name basis.  It just allows for a more intimate experience.  Lakeview’s Administrator and Marketing Director Scott Christie said people respond well to their family-like atmosphere.

“When people come through our doors, they immediately think this place feels like home.”  Scott hopes to give the facility a more lodge-like feel over time, adding to its already splendid atmosphere.  The residents at Lakeview already have a lot of great scenery to look at around the facility including a gorgeous lounge, which incorporates a birdcage in one corner.  Residents and staff alike can also look across Hamlin Lake from the deck located behind the facility and experience one of the most breathtaking views in all of Smethport.  The view offers much of the desired serenity for people in need of skilled nursing or personal care.

Scott said that the facility’s small size also enables him to do a little bit of everything around the place, which he says gives him a better feel for what others have to deal with.  Along with this sense of understanding, comes a great measure of appreciation for what his employees do for both him and the residents.  Perhaps no one person deserves Scotts praise more than Carole Collins, who has worked at the facility since about 1990.  Scott says he has tried to nominate her for aid of the year through the Pennsylvania Healthcare Association numerous times, but she has declined every time, having no desire for that much attention.

“She’s amazing!” Scott says.  “If you ever meet her, make sure to shake her hand.”

Now, if you would like to have the chance to shake Carole’s hand, or just meet her and all the other wonderful staff members at Lakeview Senior Care and Living Center, make sure you check out the directions linked above so you can be sure to find them.
