While at the University of Nebraska  Medical Center he developed his interest and experience in new and emerging minimally invasive vascular surgery techniques such as angioplasty and stenting. While in training he was honored with induction into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. During his time on active duty with the U.S. Navy, he graduated from the Navy's Dive School in Panama City, Florida and subsequently was designated a U.S. Navy Diving Medical Officer. His operational tour was spent supporting U.S. Navy Special Operations units in the Pacific.
