National recession impacts future of Bradford Stinkfest

The lengthening fingers of a national recession has found their way into the smelliest of places, Bradford’s Stinkfest.

The annual event that honors the onion’s especially aromatic relative, the leek, will see its final celebration this year as organizers are running short on donors and volunteers.

Kathy Colman, Stinkfest coordinator, said Wednesday that officers from the East Bradford Business Association decided the ninth annual Stinkfest, which will be held May 2, will be the last.

“We are running out of volunteers, and the ones that have been doing it have been volunteering for years and years,” Colman said. “We’d rather go out with a bang than have it just fizzle out.”

Colman said last year it was difficult to raise the minimum $6,000 needed to hold the event. She anticipates this year’s fundraising will be even more difficult, with the economic climate so bleak.

In past years, donations beyond the $6,000 have been divvied out to area organizations, but, Colman said it may be difficult to raise just the minimum this year.

This year’s celebration will also be shortened by one hour, running from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

But Colman assured that this year will still provide a variety of entertainment options.

“We’re still going to have fun for the whole family,” she said. “There are some new entertainers coming in this year.”

When asked if there is any hope that the Stinkfest could be revived in future years, Colman responded, “We’d need some new blood,” referring to a lack of volunteers to organize and operate the event.
