DeMott elected chairman of Bradford Regional Airport Authority
By FRAN De LANCEY Era Correspondent delancey401@yahoo.com
Joseph DeMott Jr. was elected chairman of the Bradford Regional Airport Authority Wednesday during a reorganizational meeting.
A second-year member of the authority, DeMott of Port Allegany, is also chairman of the McKean County Commissioners. He replaces the previous chairman, Cliff Lane, who resigned from the Authority last month.
The remaining executive officers were re-elected. They are Dan Freeburg of Elk County, vice president; John Satterwhite of McKean County, secretary; and Max Brady of Elk County, treasurer.
The Authority members welcomed Fred Fesenmyer of McKean County as a new member for a five-year term. Fessenmyer noted that his late father, Wayner Fesenmyer, “was enthusiastic about the airport,” initiated the Authority and was among the first directors.
The Elk County Commissioners have appointed Freeburg to a new term on the Authority, this one also for five years.
Mike Glesk, chairman of the airport advisory committee, reported on several projects slated for action this year.
One will focus on air service development by identifying business needs. In order to fund a marketing survey, which is part of the project, an application has been sent to the U.S. Department of Transportation for a Small Communities Air Service Development grant.
Glesk noted that other efforts in marketing the airport will include billboard changes and Web site information that “show the vital role of the airport.”
Another project is the land use plan for the proposed Aviation Business Center, which would spur economic development. This plan is designed to identify the best use of available land on airport property. Right now, the area being considered for the ABC is the section that supports the airport infrastructure since this could lower costs.
Airport Director Tom Frungillo reported that he has been in discussions with McKean County Sheriff Brad Mason about having an officer at the airport during flight times.
During the engineer’s report, it was reported that a sample of the deicing fluid has been forwarded to the Authority’s engineering firm, Lee-Simpson Associates Inc. of DuBois.
Ruth O’Connell, general manager for Continental Connection, which is operated by Gulfstream International Airlines, said that the December activity report showed an inbound completion factor of 91 percent and 95 percent for outbound flights. During that same time, the load factors were 16 percent and 15 percent respectively for inbound and outbound flights.
DeMott and Rob Huber, another McKean County member of the Authority, told O’Connell about recent cases of passengers having complimentary comments for Gulfstream and Continental employees.
Frungillo was appointed by resolution as Open Records officer for the Authority to comply with Pennsylvania’s Right to Know law.
