Numerous events are slated to make First Night Bradford 2009 a fun way to count down to the new year.
This year will be the event’s 11th occurrence, with many performers back by popular demand and several new acts added to the mix.
“We try and vary the entertainment so everyone will have something to see,” said Darla Oaks, head of the First Night committee. “We have kept prices the same this year. And we did stay with two movies at the theater in the morning early, which is kind of nice. “Black Beauty” and “Surfs Up” will be playing.”
The day’s activities begin with the movies at 10 a.m.
Several popular entertainers have returned for this year’s festivities. Emily Marshall, the 2007 Fretzican Idol, and Montgomery Burgoon, the 2008 Fretzican Idol, will both perform pop selections during the evening. Fieldstone, the folk idol performing Celtic songs, will return again this year, as do the Mountain Laurel Harmonizers and the John Kytic Quintet.
“We brought back Amazing Amos, the Amish magician. He was a huge hit last year, but everyone didn’t get to see him, due to limited seating. This year he has been moved to Hill Memorial, so there will be more room for the audience,” explained Oaks. “We also have Ramelle MacCoy, the hypnotist, back. He is always a big hit.”
Another show that had to change venues this year is the Wild World of Animals.
“We brought back the Wild World of Animals. They were in the Corydon Township Building last year and it was too crowded, so we moved them to a bigger area this year. They will be at the First United Methodist Church and they will be on a stage so they can be seen. Their shows will also start earlier this year, with one at 4 p.m., one at 6:30 p.m. and one at 7:30 p.m.”
New entertainment this year promises to draw interest as well.
“We have some interesting things going on,” Oaks said. “Barb Pederson has a group of local people who were in Kiwanis Kapers who will perform a show of mini skits. That will be a lot of fun.
“We have Evan Dewitt, a ventriloquist, coming up from Philadelphia. He has different characters, animals, people. So that will be a nice variety. The Bubble Gum Machine is an interactive family show, with singing, dancing and all kinds of things to entertain the kids.
“We have Rhinestone Cowboy, which is a local favorite. He does some Country-Western songs and he will be at Emery Towers,” Oaks continued. “The Sadie Green Sales Jug Band will be at Grace Lutheran Sanctuary. We have been trying to get them for a few years, and we finally did get them this year.”
With the events set and the holidays nearing, tickets are set to go on sale soon.
“We hope to have tickets out next week, so if you want them for stocking stuffers, they will be available,” Oaks stated.
The event, as always, has been shown strong support by its many sponsors.
“Our sponsors have been great again this year. Even though the economy is not great, they have really been supportive,” Oaks noted.
An impressive fireworks show by Zambelli Fireworks International will cap the evening’s activities at midnight and help ring in the New Year.
