BIRD REPORTS: When Harold and Sara Whitney were shoveling a path in the snow Monday they were startled by an unexpected sound: Their dogs flushed a woodcock. Harold tells us the bird found what was the only patch of green in his yard on Colegrove Avenue and was perhaps looking for a morsel of food. In any case, he thought it seemed a bit late in the year to see this “late bloomer.”
We also heard from “Chuck” asking if anyone else had heard a flock of geese honking overhead during our snow storm a week ago Friday. He was shoveling on Willard Avenue when he heard the sound — but couldn’t see anything in the heavy snowfall.
TV TIME: If you’ve a fan of the reality show, “Little People, Big World,” you may have caught a local angle in this week’s edition.
The program, which airs Monday evenings on The Learning Channel, follows the lives of an Oregon family named the Roloffs. Both parents are dwarves as is one son. Two other boys and a daughter are of normal height.
The Olean, N.Y., Times Herald reported this week that Chris Martin of Allegany, N.Y., a devoted fan of the show, got a tattoo on his right shoulder blade of the father, Matt Roloff. Chris got the tattoo on a bet from co-workers at Duggan & Duggan contracting firm.
He won the bet, and the Duggan brothers paid for the tattoo and also forked over $100 for losing the dare.
Kyle Duggan took a picture of the tattoo and sent it to the TV show. A few weeks later, Matt Roloff phoned and invited Chris, the Duggan brothers, and Kyle’s wife, Katie, to his farm near Portland, Ore., to see where the show is filmed.
As a thank you for the gesture, the Duggans sent a package of T-shirts, ball caps and sweatshirts, all adorned with the Duggan & Duggan logo. The gifts were just that — gifts. But one of the Roloffs reportedly wore one of the sweatshirts during filming and it aired on the program last Monday.
Not bad advertising for an Allegany company, eh? Sounds like the bet — even losing the bet — paid off big time.
