LOOK UP: Shirley States writes us this past Monday, “Just wanted to report that we spotted a bald eagle this AM in a tree not far from the Allegheny River just east of Port Allegany borough on Route 6.”

We’re told that the American eagle is becoming increasingly common but, to us, a sighting is always a thrill.

POST SCRIPT: Harold Pier writes to us from Remsen, N.Y., about our columns on the American chestnut tree:

“About five years ago I was given six American Chestnut seedlings which I planted. Four of them are alive and doing well, but so far have produced no chestnuts. These trees come from stock raised, I believe, in New Jersey and they are supposedly resistant to blight. Many of the same trees are planted and doing well at the Trenton Greenbelt Park in Barneveld, N.Y.

“I was certainly happy to hear about the mature trees at Rimrock.”

And Skip Riekofsky writes us from Kushequa: “There are definitely chestnut trees ‘out there.’ I might add that work has been ongoing now for awhile to come up with a blight-resistant strain of the American chestnut by crossing it with other types of chestnuts. This information can be obtained at several websites. In fact, I believe there is even an American Chestnut Society.”

ON PARADE: Valerie Hollister of Lewis Run writes, “Former Bradford resident Aaron Jarvis, son of Colleen and Howard Jarvis, will be marching in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade with West Johnston High School of Benson, N.C.”

“Aaron is a senior and plays the saxophone. (His sister Leslie, now a sophomore in college, played at the last presidential inauguration with the band.) The West Johnston band can be seen at WJHSBANDS.org.”

Valerie, Aaron’s aunt, will be traveling to New York City with his grandmother Theresa Bond and  cousin Kaylee Hollister to see the parade.

SAD STORY: As we write this column, the snow is steadily accumulating outside our window. With that in mind, we pass along a comment from Larry Vecellio of Gainesville, Ga.: “Gas is at $1.83 and the leaves are still on the trees.”

On the gas reports, we heard from Fred MacKendrick in Gillespie, Ill., last weekend: “In our area regular gasoline is $1.97 a gallon. I now can afford to fill up. How long is this going to last?”
