TEA TIME?: How about this as a solution to our high gas prices?
Jack Homa of “Klondike” writes, “I think it is time for our crack investigative team from The Bradford Era to dig into these high gas prices. We are definitely being ripped off and it is time for the newspaper to demand to know why. I thought when a Country Fair came some years ago that they would reduce the price. They did for a few weeks. They joined in the rip-off.”
“Country Fair in Erie and surrounding areas are selling gas for $2.29 on Nov. 14. How can it be cheaper in Erie than in Bradford?
“We have been ripped off for the last 40 years that I know of. It’s time to throw the tea into the bay!”
This newspaper has tried many times over the years to get to the bottom of this unremitting inequity of our gas prices — to no avail. As a newspaper, you can ask all the questions you want. But, first amendment or not, it doesn’t mean anyone will answer.
How refineries set prices is considered “proprietary,” and, so, not even the politicians have been willing or able to push through the wall protecting the so-called free market.
We should note that we are not talking about ARG in Bradford which is not a player in the gasoline market, but about United Refinery of Warren which is the primary supplier to this region.
As for Country Fair, it did lower prices when it first entered the Bradford market. Several years later, however, this chain was purchased by United Refinery and the “gas war” came to a mysterious stop. Go figure.
Meanwhile, we also heard from Linda Platko Green of Bradford on Thursday: “I went to Tom’s River, N.J., last Friday and I was very surprised but pleasantly surprised at how low their gas was. Ready for this? Most of you just might want to move there. A gallon of gas was $2.03! Can you believe that? What’s up with Bradford being sooooo high? Someone else that I spoke to in Tom’s River said that he paid $2.07 at another station. Just thought I would mention this, that in other places, their gas prices are much gentler to the drivers than ours are here in Bradford.”
