Digel, Irons win D-9 doubles tennis title
DUBOIS - Bradford High’s Hilary Digel and Jodi Irons brought home a District 9 Class AAA doubles tennis title Tuesday night.
Digel, a junior, and Irons, a sophomore, defeated Emily Graffius and Keshia Farnsworth of Punxsutawney 6-3, 6-2 in the finals. Earlier in the day, Digel and Irons beat Jamie Rapaport and Grace Cramer from DuBois 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinals and topped Emily Von Gunden and Jenny Miller of Clearfield 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals.
“Hilary and Jodi played extremely well and we are really proud of them,” BAHS coaches Debbie Digel and Evelyn Alexander said. “They came out with a game plan and executed it perfectly. It was a very tough match.
“This was an awesome win for Hilary and Jodi defeating the defending champions in straight sets.”
The coaches said Digel and Irons worked all season for this accomplishment.
“With their determination and strong effort we knew it could become a reality,” the coaches noted. “It was their first year playing together as first doubles.”
The coaches thanked volunteer coach Mark Sherman for all his “input and exuberance” this season.
Bradford’s other doubles team of Caroline Morris and Michelle Cline lost in the quarterfinals to Graffius and Farnsworth 6-2, 6-1.
Digel and Irons will represent District 9 at the PIAA Class AAA doubles tournament Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 at the Hershey Racket Club.
In the D-9 Class AA doubles tournament, Kelsey Hansen and Megan Herbstritt of St. Marys beat Abby Grumley and Ellie Kocjancic of Johnsonburg for the title.
