The preliminary hearing for a Bradford man accused of attempted murder for allegedly hitting his girlfriend on the head with a claw hammer will be rescheduled to allow more time for the hearing to take place.

Originally set for 9 a.m. Wednesday before Magisterial District Judge Dom Cercone, the hearing for Uriah Schiappa, 23, of 205 W. Washington St., will now be reset to allow more time for testimony.

Schiappa is charged with criminal attempt at homicide; aggravated assault with extreme indifference to human life, a first-degree felony; aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony; terroristic threats, a first-degree misdemeanor; and recklessly endangering another person, a second-degree misdemeanor.

On Wednesday, Schiappa was present, as were the arresting officer, Hiel Bartlett of the Bradford City Police Department; and the witnesses in the case. However, there were a total of 20 criminal cases pending before Cercone Wednesday morning, which led to Schiappa’s case being continued, to be rescheduled for a separate day and time.

According to court records, at 10:50 p.m. Sept. 2, Bradford City Police were called to a domestic disturbance at Schiappa’s address. Police were told the suspect in an assault had just fled from the back door of the residence and officers gave chase, apprehending Schiappa beside 189 W. Washington St.

While an officer was escorting Schiappa back to the patrol car, a neighbor asked what had happened. Schiappa replied, “I did it. I finally did it. I conked her in the head with a hammer,” the records read.

The officer put Schiappa in the patrol car and went back to the residence, where Tara Strait was on the floor, bleeding from her head. Schiappa apparently later told police he had lost his temper and hit Strait many times with a hammer, the records read. She had visible injuries to her head and chest, police said.

Schiappa remains incarcerated in McKean County Jail in Smethport without bail.
